University Directory Search

This WebUtility provides the ability to search for contact information for Employees, Students and Departments at Edinboro University.

What is "UDS"?

"UDS" Is a Three Letter Acronym for University Directory Search. Inspired by the Personal Phone Directory (PPD) used by many for on-campus contact information, we hope the University Directory Search will be even more useful as it develops.

Internal/Authenticated   vs. External

The "External" UDS logo (on the right) indicates that you are accessing the University Directory Search from outside the University's Internet Domain (this includes the Residence Halls). We respect the privacy of our students, and external users are limited in the information they can retrieve. If you have a network account with Edinboro University however, you may Authenticate yourself by clicking on the "External" UDS logo. After successfully authenticating (by using your EUP Username and Password), you will have full access to the UDS data, just as if you were within the university's Internet Domain.

Note that we require Internet Explorer for authentication.

Search For:

You can search for results in three categories: Employees, Students, or Offices. Within the search results, Usernames are clickable; if you have local mail client software, clicking the username will enable you to send the individual e-mail.

If multiple keywords are entered, each must exist within the Search In criteria (below). For Example, searching for Blaine, Jonathan would return records where "Blaine" was found in name, location, etc. AND "Jonathan" was also found in name, location, etc.

4/14/2004: The problem with multiple keywords in Student and Office searches has been resolved.

Search In:

You may restrict your search to one or more types of information, including Name, Phone, Username and Location (Address/Department) data. So if you are searching for someone named Miller, you can restrict the search to just "Name", and you'll only get people with "Miller" in their name (and not all the people who work in the Miller Research Center).

If you uncheck all of the categories and perform a search, the University Directory Search will assume this was an accident and search on the name field only. ;-)

Student E-Mail Addresses?

Student E-Mail addresses are limited to University-provided accounts (i.e. a123456b). There has been discussion about updating the Central Directory to allow for personalized addresses (such as a Hotmail or Yahoo address) but this project is not actively being developed at this time.

Larger Results Window & Other Parameters

By default, the results window is 62 pixels. If you want to customize this, you can specify a query string which indicates the size you would like, between 60 and 500. For Example:

Web_UDS.asp?WindowHeight=200

You can also specify search criteria on a query string, for example:

Web_UDS.asp?SearchFor='jblaine'&InDB=Students&UseUsername=YES

The fields to use are as follows, all or none may be used:

SearchFor
What to search for. Presence of this value will cause an automatic submission of the form.
InDB
Specify one of the following: Employees, Students, or Offices. Determines which database to search.
UseName
Indicates that the Name field should be used when searching for matches (if none of the UseField are specified, all are used)
UsePhone
Indicates that the Phone field should be used when searching for matches
UseUsername
Indicates that the Username field should be used when searching for matches. Because usernames are unique, this is a good field to use if you have the username available and want additional information.
UseLocation
Indicates that the Location data should be used when searching for matches.

Helpful Hints

If you're using Internet Explorer, you don't need to use the mouse to activate a search. Just type in the criteria and hit "Enter", this will being the search for you.

If you are using Active Desktop on your system, you can embed the University Directory Search directly, and always have it available. More information on how to do this will be included in the future.

Future Considerations

This WebUtility was designed to be compact. As such, it shows only the most commonly needed information from PPD. We are considering making the person's Name clickable, which would open a new window and show you full details for that person/department.
