Greetings and welcome to Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania, one of the 14 universities in the Pennsylvania
State System of Higher Education. Congratulations on your
choice of Edinboro University as the place where you will
spend some of the most important years of your life.
Edinboro University was founded as the Edinboro
Academy in 1857 by the citizens of Edinboro, many of
whom were of Scottish descent. Their commitment to
teaching and learning, their work ethic, and their strength of
family tempered by upbringing in the great Highland Clans
have brought a unique sense of perspective and
commitment to all that we do here at Edinboro University.
As a people, the Scots are both hearty and hardy. I would
like to think that those of us who serve and learn here are
carrying on the legacy of the great traditions set for us by
the Scots 150 years ago.
You are a member of the Edinboro Family, a
student- and learner-centered environment where students
come first. Edinboro University students are not just a
priority, they are the priority. They are involved in
everything we do at Edinboro and are fully involved as
participants in the University's life, behavior and culture.
The Edinboro Family provides a setting that makes for a
friendly, supportive and responsive atmosphere, and the
faculty, administration and professional support staff have
joined me in my commitment to continuously improve all
that we do to promote the academic and personal
excellence of Edinboro University students.
Edinboro University celebrated the arrival of the
21st century and the new millennium by proclaiming it as
our "Century of Civility." The University community
joined together to create opportunities for the Edinboro
Family to experience the ideals of civility fairness,
tolerance, collegiality and civic responsibility. Since that
time, we have identified a civility-centered theme for each
academic year. In 2003, we identified Building a
prosperous future through academic excellence and civility
as the theme that would take us to the University's
Sesquicentennial, which will be celebrated this year. As this
theme suggests, a commitment to academics, excellence,
and civility will lead to prosperity for the entire Edinboro
Family and region and world that we serve. We invite all
members of the University community to become involved
in our plans to celebrate 150 years of service. Visit the
University web page (www.edinboro.edu) to learn how you
can contribute.
Have a great year! And let's keep in touch.
