EXPERIENCE

This course provides teacher education majors with
an introductory field experience. The field experience
is mainly observational in nature and occurs in area
public schools.

EDUCATION IN AMERICAN
SOCIETY
3 sem. hrs.
This introductory course acquaints prospective teach-
ers with the effects of historical, philosophical and
societal influences which have influenced the devel-
opment of American education. It examines the pur-
pose of education in a democracy and the relationship
of the school to society, emphasizing the present
structure and organization of the American school
system, financial and governmental influences, and
the role of the educator and students in a culturally
diverse society. Prerequisite: ENGL102.

ETHICS AND AMERICAN
EDUCATION
3 sem. hrs.
This interdisciplinary course combines faculty from
education, and history with staff from student affairs
to provide knowledge of moral theories, historical
background of American education, examination of
current issues in education and an education-related
service component as they apply to ethical dilemmas,
analysis, problem solving and moral reasoning in the
current educational environment. This course is
approved for General Education ­ Core 6.

URBAN SEMINAR
3 sem. hrs.
This course is designed to provide a first-hand expe-
rience in an urban, multicultural setting. Specifically,
to provide teacher education majors with an opportu-
nity to gain an understanding of cultural, economic,
ethnic, racial, and social differences through close
work with a cooperating teacher and students in an
inner city school. The seminar includes a planned mix
of school, community, and cultural experiences. This
course is approved for General Education ­
Distribution 2.

TEACHING READING IN THE
SUBJECT AREA
2 sem. hrs.
This course assists preservice teachers in learning
how to teach students to read and communicate more
effectively in all subject areas. Students enhance their
effectiveness as teachers by learning how to integrate
reading strategies into middle and high school content
area teaching. These strategies help preservice teach-
ers make informed decisions to help improve com-
prehension and metacognition. Prerequisite:
EDUC271.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES
FOR THE TEACHING OF
ENGLISH
3 sem. hrs.
This course prepares prospective English teachers to
make decisions regarding theories and models of
English language acquisition and development. It
addresses language arts instruction, daily and unit
planning, use of print and nonprint media, techniques
for teaching ESL and special needs students. It
addresses problem solving in integrated language arts
instruction, classroom management, assessment and
motivational strategies. Prerequisites: ENGL102 and
18 hours of coursework in English major content
area.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES
FOR MATHEMATICS 3 sem. hrs.
This advanced undergraduate course prepares
prospective mathematics teachers to make informed
decisions regarding theories and models of mathe-
matics instruction, elements of daily and long range
planning, teacher and student characteristics, learning
styles, use of technology and prepared visuals, and
inclusion of students with special needs; and address-
es problem solving in the selection and delivery of
instruction, classroom management, assessment, and
motivational strategies. Prerequisite: ENGL102 and
18 hours in major area.

FOR SECONDARY SCIENCE
3 sem. hrs.
This advanced undergraduate course prepares
prospective science teachers to make informed deci-
sions regarding theories, research, and models of best
practice for daily and long range planning, learning
styles, use of technology; techniques for teaching stu-
dents of diverse backgrounds and those with special
needs; and addresses problem solving in delivering
science instruction, in classroom management, in
assessment, and in motivational strategies.
Prerequisite: ENGL102 and 18 hours in major area.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES
FOR SOCIAL STUDIES
3 sem. hrs.
This advanced undergraduate course prepares
prospective social studies teachers to make informed
decisions regarding theories and models of social
studies instruction, ramifications of the individual
social sciences on the integrated social studies cur-
riculum, elements of short term and long range
instructional planning, student characteristics and
learning styles, and the inclusion of students with spe-
cial needs; and addresses reflection and problem solv-
ing in instructional strategy selection, classroom man-
agement techniques, and methods of assessment.
Prerequisite: ENGL102 and 18 hours in major area.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES
FOR TEACHING OF MODERN
FOREIGN LANGUAGES
3 sem. hrs.
This course prepares prospective foreign language
teachers to make informed decisions regarding theo-
ries and models of language acquisition and develop-
ment, foreign language instructional methods, daily
and unit planning, application of the standards, tech-
niques for teaching ESL and special needs students. It
addresses problem solving in integrated foreign lan-
guage instruction, classroom management, assess-
ment, and motivational strategies. Prerequisite:
ENGL102 and 18 hours in coursework in the foreign
language major content area.

SECONDARY EDUCATION
FIELD EXPERIENCE 3 sem. hrs.
This course provides secondary education majors a
pre-student teaching field experience with cooperat-
ing teachers in the public schools. Students teach a
minimum of six full-period lessons and complete var-
ious professional development activities. Each stu-
dent must complete a formal application, complete
SEDU370 or SEDU371 or SEDU372 or SEDU373 or
SEDU374 with a grade of C or better, and provide his
or her own transportation.

MEASUREMENT AND
EVALUATION IN THE MIDDLE
AND SECONDARY SCHOOL
CLASSROOM
2 sem. hrs.
This course introduces prospective teachers to princi-
ples and procedures of measurement and evaluation
used in secondary schools. It emphasizes correctly-
written objectives, properly-constructed tests to
measure the achievement of those objectives, proper
analysis of the results of the tests, and the use of that
information to evaluate students. This course should
be taken prior to the junior level field experience.
Prerequisite: EDUC271.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
AND COMPUTER LITERACY
3 sem. hrs.
This course provides students with methods and
means for using instructional technology to solve
teaching-learning problems. Readings, course work,
and hands-on experience provide students with a
basis not only for thinking about technology but also
for actually producing media and materials. Students
gain a working knowledge of applications such as
Microsoft Works, e-mail, the Internet/WWW, of the
hardware necessary to accomplish these tasks, and of
materials and the methods for integrating these mate-
rials to support the instructional process. This course
is approved for General Education ­ Computer
Competency.

PROFESSIONAL TOPICS IN
EDUCATION
2 sem. hrs.
This course provides basic information about topics
of particular relevance to teachers: health related
issues, alcohol, AIDS, child abuse, school law, class-
room management, and selected current issues in edu-
cation. Prerequisite: must have 96 credits or more.

STUDENT TEACHING
12 sem. hrs.
This culminating experience coordinated and super-
vised by University faculty, provides opportunities to
display competency in middle and secondary schools
under the direct, daily supervision of a qualified
cooperating teacher. Under extenuating circum-
stances, enrollment for six semester hours requires
permission of both the chairperson of Secondary
Education Department and the dean of education.

SEDU525
MIDDLE LEVEL
INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP
1-3 sem. hrs.
This course develops instructional leadership skills
by studying instructional leadership, staff manage-
ment, cooperative planning, and the application of
educational research to curriculum development. The
course will also include strategic teaching as a means
to mastery level teaching and as a basis for team lead-
ership.
