Special Course Numbers
000-049
Courses with these numbers are undergraduate cours-
es. Credit earned in these courses may not be used in
meeting requirements for graduation except in music
courses. The numbers 050-599 are used to designate
courses with undergraduate credit that may be applied
toward two and four year degrees unless otherwise
noted in the course description.
397-399
These numbers are used to designate "Studies in. . .",
courses. These courses are designed to permit the
offering of content not normally included within the
departmental curricula. A student may accumulate no
more than 15 semester hours toward graduation from
any department and no more than 24 hours total
toward graduation from all departments. A repeat of a
"Studies in. . ." course is not recommended to
improve a grade.
490-494
These course numbers are used for independent
undergraduate study. No student may elect independ-
ent study before the third semester of his/her work so
as to insure ample time for demonstration of his/her
capability and time for observation by the faculty. See
the Academic Affairs section for further information.
500-599
Courses with these numbers are advanced undergrad-
uate courses; however, graduate students may enroll
in selected courses for graduate credit with the per-
mission of the dean of Graduate Studies. A maximum
of twelve semester hours of graduate credit earned in
these courses will be accepted toward meeting the
course requirements for the master's degree.
600-699
Courses with these numbers are graduate courses;
however, advanced undergraduate students may
enroll in these courses for undergraduate credit pro-
vided they (1) are at least a second semester junior (2)
possess a cumulative quality point average of 2.5 or
better (4 point scale), and (3) have the written
approval of their advisor, the instructor, and the Dean
of Graduate Studies.

Courses with these numbers are graduate courses and
enrollment in these courses is limited to individuals
admitted to the Graduate Program of Edinboro
University.

UNIV100 serves as an introduction to the University
and to skills essential for academic success. The
course is designed to help undeclared students and
students in transition define goals, a major and a
career path, and to engage in strategies to attain those
goals.

THE HARRISBURG INTERNSHIP
SEMESTER
15 sem. hrs.
The Harrisburg Internship Semester (THIS) is a 16-
week internship in Harrisburg sponsored by the State
System of Higher Education. One exceptional student
from each SSHE University will be selected each
semester to work with legislators and senior execu-
tives in state government on projects appropriate to
the student's areas of interest. The internship will pro-
vide 15 semester hours of academic credit, consisting
of a nine hour internship, a three-hour seminar, and a
three-hour independent project.

INTERNSHIP IN SPECIALIZED
STUDIES
3-15 sem. hrs.
This course allows the student majoring in
Specialized Studies to gain experience in his or her
chosen profession. The nature of the experience and
the time spent determine the amount of credit earned.
Prerequisite: at least 64 hours of college credit.
WMST360 PHILOSOPHY AND FEMINISM
3 sem. hrs.
This course critically examines traditional and con-
temporary concepts of the moral, social, and meta-
physical status of women. It pays special attention to
the strengths and weaknesses of feminist theories
concerning the philosophical nature and significance
of gender and related concepts. Prerequisite: one prior
philosophy course or permission of the instructor.

ART IN ELEMENTARY
EDUCATION
3 sem. hrs.
This course surveys the philosophy, psychology and
trends in art education. It explores the materials,
methods and problems of teaching art through cre-
ative activities, readings, discussions, and reports.
ARED312
ART IN SECONDARY
EDUCATION
3 sem. hrs.
This course acquaints students with art education in
upper middle schools, junior high schools, and senior
high school. It emphasizes art curriculum develop-
ment, art classroom management, and art career ori-
entation for preadolescent and adolescent secondary
school children. It includes on-site observations, case
studies, and art lesson planning experiences.

ART OF THE YOUNG CHILD
3 sem. hrs.
A study of the background, development stages, cre-
ativeness and motivation necessary to teach art to
young children. Studio practice in art activities that
can be adapted to children will be an important part of
the course.

FIELD EXPERIENCE IN ART
EDUCATION
3 sem. hrs.
This course provides art majors with a variety of
activities and experiences in actual school art pro-
grams. Serving as art teacher aides, art majors devote
two half-days per week to this supervised pre-student
teaching field experience. Prerequisite: ART311 and
ARED312.

ARTS AND CRAFTS FOR
EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN
3 sem. hrs.
The general objectives for methods in art are
reviewed and studied in relation to the needs of spe-
cial education students in order to gain insight into
how best to have meaningful activities in art for the
various types of exceptional children. (The Special
Education Department is frequently consulted in
order that the course might best accomplish its pur-
pose.)

STRATEGIES FOR ART
TEACHERS
3 sem. hrs.
This is a seminar course devoted to a specific, current
issue in teaching and learning as that issue relates to
art education; this course requires each student to
undertake an in-depth study and research of that issue
in light of its practical application to his/her own art
teaching situation or context.

OVERVIEW OF WESTERN ART
HISTORY
3 sem. hrs.
This course is an introduction and general survey of
art and artists from Pre-historic times through the
20th century. Students will examine major periods
and styles which have contributed to Western art
through the use of slides, videos and films in coordi-
nation with the lectures. This course is approved for
General Education Core 1.

OVERVIEW OF NON-WESTERN
ART HISTORY
3 sem. hrs.
This course introduces students to non-western artis-
tic cultures: Islam, India, China, Japan, and Sub-
Saharan Africa. Each culture will be examined with
an emphasis on major works of architecture, painting,
sculpture, and the applied arts. Important historical,
religious, and intercultural developments will illus-
trate strong artistic connections between these cul-
tures and Western Art. This course is approved for
General Education Core 1.

ART OF THE 20TH CENTURY
(GROUP I)

A survey of painting and sculpture from 1900 with
special emphasis given to the development of art
styles. The purpose of this course is to provide an
overview of significant artists and art movements of
the twentieth century.

A survey of painting and sculpture from the French
Revolution to 1900 stressing the major artists and
styles from Neo-Classicism to Art Nouveau.
