The English and Theatre Arts Department pursues the following goals: (1) to
teach students that writing is integral to creating and conveying new ideas; (2) to
expand the student's ability to write effectively; (3) to enhance the students' abil-
ity to analyze and critique texts; (4) to acquaint students with an array of signifi-
cant creative and critical works.
To meet these goals, the Department of English and Theatre Arts offers the fol-
lowing Bachelor of Arts programs. For information concerning the requirements
for the Bachelor of Science in Education degree programs in Secondary English,
please refer to the Secondary Education Department.
The campus newspaper and the literary magazine provide students with extracur-
ricular writing opportunities.
The Theatre Arts staff offers the Bachelor of Arts in Drama degree and sponsors
dramatic activities on campus. Students from many departments participate in
performances staged in the Center for Performing Arts. Theatre Arts majors, who
learn from actual play production as well as from class work, gain experience in
proscenium and arena staging.
