concentration, students in this course develop their
ability to match poetic form to subject matter; deepen

speaking, and writing skills as they respond to one
another's poems, poems written by masters of the art,
and poems published in current literary periodicals.

ADVANCED CREATIVE
NONFICTION

This course combines the information-gathering tech-
niques of the nonfiction writer ­ observation,
research, and recollection ­ with the stylistic and
rhetorical techniques of the novelist or short-story
writer ­ setting, conflict, character development, nar-
rative voice, dialogue, and metaphor. This course will
acquaint students with the work of contemporary cre-
ative nonfiction writers, and will require students to
draft, revise and edit several extended-length nonfic-
tion prose pieces, with the ultimate objective of pub-
lication.

ADVANCED SCREENWRITING

Building on a foundation laid earlier in the writing
concentratation, students in this course develop their
ability to complete a feature-length screenplay using
the accepted professional format and standards.

THESIS SEMINAR IN WRITING
3 sem. hrs.
This course provides English/writing majors the
opportunity to demonstrate professional expertise by
planning a semester-long project in a particular writ-
ing genre; making a formal proposal to the seminar as
a whole; participating in regularly scheduled oral and
written critiques of work-in-progress; producing a
ready-for-publication version of the project; and pre-
senting the completed project in a public forum.

INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH
LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

This course presents the high points of French his-
torico-social progression from earliest days to the
present, including examples of French literature inter-
spersed with film and lecture. The course introduces
modern France and the very basic principles of the
French language and its influences on English. This
course is approved for General Education ­ Core 5.

This course introduces the structures of the French
language in a cultural context. The student will not
only develop the basic skills for communication in
the language but also a fundamental awareness of the

SECOND COURSE IN FRENCH

This course reviews the basic language structures pre-
sented in FREN101 and continues the survey of the
complete set of French grammatical and syntactical

This course develops understanding and appreciation
of the structure and style of written French. By exam-
ple, analysis, and practice, students learn to write cor-

This course offers students practice in spoken French:
review of pronunciation and intonation patterns,

Conducted principally in French, this course is
designed to introduce and examine key elements
essential to understanding French cultural behavior
beginning with value concepts such as time, human

This course presents a selection of French novels in
translation representing various movements and liter-
ary periods in French literature, from the 17th to the

This series consists of a variety of short courses in
specialized areas beyond the content of regular cours-
es. Students may take as many or as few of such
courses as they wish. Credit will be granted at the
