(re)habilitation of individuals with sen-
sorineural hearing loss. Its scope includes the
role of significant others, use of technology,
legal issues, educational vocational issues, and

PROCEDURES

This course studies the clinical application of
formal and informal diagnostic procedures
used with children and adults. It identifies the
requisite competencies necessary for the
entry-level speech-language pathologist. It
emphasizes clinical problem solving skills.

SEMINAR IN
CRANIOFACIAL
PATHOLOGY
3 sem. hrs.
This course studies the development of the
craniofacial complex and selected commu-
nicative disorders that may result from various
congenital or acquired pathologies. The inter-
disciplinary team management approach will
be emphasized. The course will focus specifi-
cally on the clinical responsibilities of the
speech-language pathologist.

VOICE/RESONANCE
DISORDERS
3 sem. hrs.
This course examines the histology and physi-
ology of the vocal mechanism and tract, as
well as the organic, neurogenic, psychogenic,
iatrogenic, and idiopathic etiologies of dys-
phonia. Pre- and post-surgical management of
cleft palate, laryngeal carcinoma, and respira-
tory etiologies is discussed. Hands-on training
with acoustic and instrumental diagnostic and
treatment techniques is provided. The role of
the therapeutic relationship is explored.

ISSUES IN EARLY
INTERVENTION FOR
THE SLP
3 sem. hrs.
This course addresses issues encountered by
speech-language pathologists when working
with children ages birth through five years.
Factors placing children at risk for communi-
cation disorders will be discussed. Issues
include the role of the speech-language pathol-
ogist as a team member, the nature and deliv-
ery of family-centered services, public law,
and culturally sensitive assessment and inter-
vention approaches.

DISORDERS
3 sem. hrs.
This course reviews current speech motor con-
trol processes and the neuropathologies of
speech production. Diagnosis and treatment of
dysarthria and speech apraxia in children and
adults is emphasized.

RESEARCH METHODS IN
COMMUNICATION
DISORDERS
3 sem. hrs.
This course will explore various research
designs and problems in speech-language
pathology and audiology. It assists students in
understanding, evaluating, and designing
research projects in the field of communica-
tion disorders. Focus is on critically evaluating
current research and understanding research
methodology for clinical applications.

COMMUNICATION
DISORDERS IN THE
EDUCATIONAL
SETTING
3 sem. hrs.
The course examines current issues of school
management, federal and Pennsylvania special
education law, and literacy disorders. It pro-
vides hands-on experience in the assessment
and treatment of children with communication
disorders in school settings. Prerequisite:
SHLD635, SHLD640.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
3 sem. hrs.
This experience will meet the needs of stu-
dents who wish to prepare, under the direction
of a member of the graduate faculty, individual
studies or projects in the field of speech-lan-
guage pathology or audiology. Prerequisite:
consent of the department chairperson.

THESIS
3-6 sem. hrs.
Research for the Master's thesis is conducted
under the supervision of an advisor. Prerequi-
site: consent of the departmental chairperson.
NOTE: All courses are graded based on crite-
