Degree Requirements
Individuals must comply with the degree
requirements for the master of arts degree list-
ed in this catalogue. Either a thesis or a non-
credit master's project must be completed. The
student must also complete a written examina-
tion and/or oral comprehensive examination. It
is the student's responsibility to arrange with
the director of the Speech-Language Patholo-
gy program for the scheduling of this exami-
nation.

NEUROANATOMY FOR
THE SPEECH-LANGUAGE
PATHOLOGIST 3 sem. hrs.
This course introduces the neuroanatomy and
physiology underlying speech and language
systems. It emphasizes an understanding of the
nervous system from a neurobiological per-
spective. Behavioral and communicative dis-
turbances resulting from disease, defect, or
injury are discussed.

AUGMENTATIVE AND
ALTERNATIVE
COMMUNICATION (AAC)

This course develops knowledge and skills to
provide augmentative and alternative commu-
nication (AAC) clinical services to individuals
with complex communication needs. The
course emphasizes the use of evidence-based
practice and performance measurement to sup-
port the assessment, intervention, and funding
processes. It presents a range of AAC options
and strategies based on the three language rep-
resentation methods used to generate commu-
nication.

SEMINAR IN CLINICAL
METHODS
3 sem. hrs.
This course is designed to familiarize students
with procedures, methods, and materials used
in clinical service delivery to clients with com-
munication disorders. Hands-on training with
screening and assessment procedures, treat-
ment elicitation and behavioral management
techniques, clinical documentation and record
keeping will be provided. Best practice stan-
dards for ethical service delivery to multicul-
tural clients and clients across the lifespan are
discussed.

AUDIOLOGY FOR THE
SPEECH LANGUAGE
PATHOLOGIST 3 sem. hrs.
This course provides students with an array of
audiological issues relevant to the practice of
speech language pathologists. Along with a
review of basic audiometric procedures are
discussions about issues in screening, central
auditory processing disorders, otitis media
with effusion, and contemporary technologies.

This course studies the development of fluen-
cy, disfluency, and stuttering. Etiology identi-
fication, assessment, and treatment strategies
are emphasized.

This course provides an in-depth study of the-
ory and practice in the area of phonological
disorders in children. Specific strategies and
techniques for assessment and intervention are
emphasized.

This course integrates theory and research in
the evaluation and treatment of language dis-
orders in school-aged children and adoles-
cents. It emphasizes current issues related to
the assessment of language behavior and inter-
vention strategies.

NEUROLOGICAL
DISORDERS
3 sem. hrs.
This course familiarizes students with the
structural and dynamic neuropathology of
cerebral injury from cerebrovascular accidents
(CVA), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and
dementia. Identifying, evaluating, and treating
constellation symptomatology of speech, lan-
guage, and memory impairments are empha-
sized.

SWALLOWING
DISORDERS IN INFANTS,
CHILDREN, AND ADULTS
3 sem. hrs.
This course acquaints students with the normal
developmental physiology of the swallowing
mechanism. Dysphagia etiologies resulting
from abnormal or acquired structural, neuro-
logical, or mechanical impairments are dis-
cussed across life span. Hands-on training
with radiographic/video-fluoroscopic diagno-
sis, oral-facial massage stimulation, and feed-
ing techniques is provided. Interdisciplinary
program planning and role delineation is
emphasized.

This course introduces students to profession-
al issues that currently define the field of
speech language pathology. It further identi-
fies the administrative and clinical responsibil-
ities expected of the speech-language patholo-
gist and prepares students to recognize and
cope with the potentially explosive issues of
the future.

AUGMENTATIVE AND
ALTERNATIVE
COMMUNICATION (AAC)

The course emphasizes the use of evidence-
based practice and performance measurement
to support AAC intervention and management
with specific populations. The course explores
the range of AAC options/strategies for indi-
viduals that rely on AAC including adults with
neurologic disorders, early intervention,
school-aged populations, and individuals with
severe physical and cognitive challenges. The
course emphasizes laboratory experience with
AAC equipment.

ADVANCED CLINICAL
PRACTICE IN SPEECH
PATHOLOGY
3 sem. hrs.
This course will provide the advanced student
of speech and hearing with a varied clinical
experience aimed at sharpening clinical skills,
providing a greater breadth and depth of clini-
cal involvements and generally increasing
clinical independence and clinical competen-
cy. Prerequisite: previous clinical experience.
