This course presents basic principles of
designing instruction of unit teaching for the
students with mental and physical disabilities.
It emphasizes content areas of mathematics,
science, and social studies, personal and social
skills, computer, career development, creative
arts, motor skills, and physical education
skills. Prerequisite: ELED302, ELED351,
SPED215, and SPED313. Students with cred-
it in SPED531 may not take SPED551 for
additional credits.

This course studies effective procedures for
teaching mentally and/or physically disabled
students to read. It employs a diagnostic pre-

This course introduces the field of Early Child-
hood-Special Education with a focus on the
young child with disabilities. It emphasizes
early intervention rationale, history, identifica-
tion of at-risk children, disabling conditions,
assessment and evaluation procedures, service
delivery approaches, program development and
model programs, professional resources and the
requirements of P.L. 99-457 and 90-538. Pre-
requisites: SPED215, APSY213 or SPED710.

FOR THE
MULTIHANDICAPPED
3 sem. hrs.
This course provides the student with teach-
ing/learning strategies to be used with individ-
uals with multihandicaps. The course includes
the rights and responsibilities of parents,
assessment, emergency and routine medical
procedures, curriculum development, and
teaching and educational intervention strate-
gies. Prerequisites: SPED215 or APSY213 or
SPED710; SPED313 or SPED720 and
SPED730.

This course provides an in-depth understand-
ing of physical disabilities and their effects on
the individual, emphasizing those conditions
and problems found in persons with disabili-
ties rather than instructional techniques.

The graduate student participates in the educa-
tional programming of exceptional individuals
at a level of proficiency which recognizes the
graduate student as a co-teacher working
under the direct supervision of an on-site
cooperating teacher, special education super-
visor, or administrative personnel. This intern-
ship enhances the graduate student's teaching
skills with the exceptional population.

SEMINAR IN SPECIAL
EDUCATION AND
EXCEPTIONALITIES

This course acquaints graduate students with
the historical development of special educa-
tion and current and anticipated issues in spe-
cial education. It reviews the attitudes toward
and treatment of exceptionalities and the
impact of exceptionalities on self, family, and
community. It stresses etiology and identifica-
tion of the various exceptionalities, as well as
knowledge of the educational process for each.

ADVANCED ASSESSMENT
IN SPECIAL EDUCATION
3 sem. hrs.
This course studies the legal, educational, psy-
chological and cultural bases for assessment
procedures used in special education. It pre-
pares students to be critical interpreters of
assessment procedures, instruments, and
results. It presents in-depth diagnostic proce-
dures in areas pertinent to children with excep-
tionalities. Prerequisite: SPED710.

ANALYSIS OF SPECIAL
EDUCATION CURRICULA
3 sem. hrs.
This course analyzes the changing roles of cur-
ricula in all areas of Special Education includ-
ing movements in curricular thinking and
developments from school exclusion to the
Individual Educational Plan. It considers spe-
cial areas of concern in each exceptionality
from birth through age 21 and includes various
approaches to developing curricula. Prerequi-
site: SPED710.

SEMINAR IN BEHAVIOR
DISORDERS
3 sem. hrs.
This course is designed to increase the stu-
dent's understanding of psychological bases of
behavioral disorders in children and to
improve his/her competencies for working
with them. Emphasis is placed on etiological
factors, treatment procedures, and educational
methodology. Consideration is also given to
the psychological and educational aspects of
learning disorders and cultural differences.
These goals are achieved through the study of
relevant research and recent innovations with
children with behavior disorders.

LEARNING DISABILITIES

This course provides theoretical and practical
knowledge in teaching youngsters who mani-
fest a significant discrepancy between their
estimated intellectual potential and demon-
strated achievement due to disorders in the
learning processes. It explores behavioral
analysis and diagnostic-remedial procedures
through an inter-disciplinary view of psychol-
ogy and special education.
