ment, rationale, and procedure guidelines for
the applying behavior modification in the
schools. It emphasizes problem areas most
inimical to the teaching-learning process.

DEVELOPMENT AND
PRACTICUM IN
CHARACTER EDUCATION

This course allows students opportunities to
review various character education programs,
to examine the major components of a com-
prehensive values education program, and to
develop and implement a character education
program appropriate for a particular age range,
grade level, or special school setting. Students
gain an understanding of the key issues
involving planning and implementation
through a practical clinical experience.

DEVELOPMENT:

This course enables significant adults (prima-
rily persons whose professions involve them
directly in formal education) to base their
interactions/interventions with children, ado-
lescents and parents on an understanding of
the process of growth and development. Stu-
dents have the opportunity to engage in a use-
oriented project related to their individual
interests/needs.

This course prepares students to apply the
basic counseling skills in a school setting. It
emphasizes the various roles of the elementary
and secondary school counselor, tools and
strategies appropriate in those settings, and in
consulting and collaboration with other school
personnel.

This course provides a foundation for graduate
students in school guidance to effectively
counsel the student with a disability. It empha-
sizes cultural, historical, and socio-economic
issues facing the adjustment of this student, as
well as specific counseling procedures for
assisting him/her in a school setting.

This course enables students to develop
knowledge and understanding regarding char-
acteristics and concerns of multi-culturally
diverse groups, the attitudes and behaviors
affected by dominant group membership, and
individual and group approaches/interventions
appropriate with diverse populations.

CONTROL

This course acquaints upper-level education
majors with behavioral and humanistic theo-
ries of classroom management, the elements
which create a positive learning atmosphere,
and the most recent research on classroom
organization and student motivation, with a
practical emphasis on case studies and class-
room simulations. The class addresses prob-
lem solving, the ethical dimension of class-
room management, conflict resolution, and
management issues as they relate to urban,
suburban, and rural schools. Students with
credit in EDUC386 may not enroll in
EDUC586.

This course will examine how schools con-
tribute to the moral development of children.
Specifically, students will be introduced to the
approaches to character education that have
been used in the nation's schools. Particular
attention will be paid to developing a compre-
hensive approach to moral development that
integrates earlier strategies. This integrative
approach holds that character education must
be a way of life for a school, not just a pro-
gram. That is, all aspects of a school's life con-
tribute to moral development.

development of character education in forces
related to character education, and the mental,

AND THE YOUNG CHILD

This course, intended for upper-level educa-
tion majors and graduate students, examines
how children develop a sense of character. It
includes theories of moral development, char-
acter formulation, the role of the family,
teacher, peer groups, and additional environ-
mental factors influencing character. Current
curricular approaches to character education
are examined.

EXCEPTIONALITIES

This course presents the historical develop-
ment of special education and current and
anticipated issues in special education. It
reviews the attitudes toward and treatment of
exceptionalities and the impact of exceptional-
ities on self, family and community, and
stresses etiology and identification of the vari-
ous exceptionalities, as well as knowledge of
the educational process for each.
